JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to perform general law enforcement, traffic regulation, crime prevention, identification, court and jail work, and to do related work as assigned. Patrols assigned areas in radio car, on motorcycle, or on foot as assigned for traffic, parking, juvenile, or special duty assignment and perform general police duty in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Protects accident scenes and assists in obtaining measurements and related data at scene of a crime, accident, or case involving public morals or welfare. Serves subpoenas and warrants. Submits arrest reports and, when necessary, testifies in court in connection with prosecution of offenders. Provides police control on special details involving fires, ambulance follow-ups, parades, emergency and courtesy escorts, and during catastrophes. Provides information and assistance to the public. Watches for stolen cars, wanted and missing persons, and lost children. Administers first aid in emergency cases.

Knowledge of:
Good knowledge of the geography and topography of the City.
Knowledge of the use of firearms.

Skill to:
A high level of intelligence and aptitude for police work.

Ability to:
Read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances and general literature pertaining to police activities and applies the above information to specific situations. Analyze and adopt quick, efficient, and reasonable courses of action. Have keen observation, to remember names, faces, and details of incidents and places. Drive an automobile safely. Pass a physical agility. Have strength and endurance of such a nature as to permit being outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Write clear and concise reports. Be willing to work on an assigned shift, under strict discipline. Meet the public with courtesy, but with firmness, when the occasion demands. Be of good moral character and reputation; and submit to a police background investigation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- be a U.S. citizen
- possess a valid driver's license
- be at least 20 1/2 years of age
- possess a high school diploma or GED
- vision: minimum of 20/70 and 20/40 uncorrected vision

OTHER INFORMATION
Recruit/Trainee:
POST Basic Academy Trained applicants will apply as a Police Officer Recruit. If graduation from POST basic academy is within six months of application, the written exam and physical agility test may be waived. Non-citizen applicants must be in process of citizenship application, at the time of employment application.

Lateral:
Lateral Officer applicants must be currently employed and in good standing with a California law enforcement agency, and have successfully completed probation. Applicants will submit a copy of Basic POST Certificate with employment application.
