JOB DESCRIPTION
LATERAL POLICE OFFICER
The City of Ocean Shores Washington has an opening for a lateral police
officer. The community is 1-˝ hours west of Olympia Washington and is located
right on the ocean of Western Washington. Ocean Shores is nationally known for
having an excellent atmosphere for relaxation, maintaining an excellent quality
of life, has a low crime rate, has a low student to teacher ratio, is in the
process of growth, is a fantastic area for fishing and hunting, is close to
national forests and clean waterways, has a temperate climate, maintains low
housing costs, and is beautiful green year around. The City is approximately 9
square miles and has 6 miles of beachfront and 26 miles of interconnected
freshwater lakes and canals. Ocean Shores has 4700 full time residents and
experiences nearly 3 million visitors a year.
THE POSITION:
Starting Salary Range: $3951 to $4574 (dependent on experience)
Educational Incentive: Full College tuition reimbursement program upon completion of probation
Court Time: 3 hours minimum at time and one half rate of pay
Call Back: 2 hours minimum
Shift Differential: .55 cents per hour for night shifts (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.)
Longevity Pay: 2% after 61 months, thereafter an increasing scale
Uniforms/Equipment: Initial uniforms and safety equipment provided by the City, Clothing allowance $700 per year
Vehicles: Take home vehicle program for officers living within 15 miles of
the city limits
Medical: Fully Paid Premiums by City of Ocean Shores
Dental/Vision: Fully Paid Premiums by City of Ocean Shores
Paid Holidays: Employee receives a check once per year for 11 holidays at straight time, plus receives 1 ˝ pay for hours worked.
Sick Leave: 8 hours per month, 100% cash out at retirement
Vacation: 8 hours per month first 24 months, thereafter an increasing scale
Probation: 12 Months.
Life Insurance: Premium paid by the City of Ocean Shores
Retirement: 2% per years of service at age 53 – vested in 5 years
Social Security: Officers do not pay into Social Security
DEPARTMENT MAKEUP: The Ocean Shores Police Department is a proactive,
professional organization that prides itself on its interaction and support
within the community. The department consists of a Chief of Police, Deputy
Chief, four sergeants, eight Patrol Officers and two Records Clerks. Dispatch
is accomplished in a regional setting. Patrol Officers work rotating shifts
with a 12-hour shift plan. Rotation is every three months. The department
operates under a department wide community policing philosophy with
neighborhood watch presentations, citizen’s academy, and DARE in schools.
Department also has a Reserve Officer program. Specialized assignments are
available on the Surf Rescue Team, Special Operations Team, Dive Team, Fresh
Waterways Marine Patrol, Detective and as an FTO.
CRIME STATISTICS: 2007 – Calls for Service = 9599 Part I Crimes 2007 – 0
Homicide, 1 rape, 1 robbery, 102 burglaries, 80 thefts, 5 car thefts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 21 years of age or older, must have or be able to
obtain a Washington driver’s license prior to employment. Must be a high school
graduate or have obtained a GED. Requires personal history free of any
convictions that relate to fitness to perform the job of Police Officer. Must
have graduated from the Washington Basic Police Academy or out of state
equivalent and have been employed as a police officer within the past two
years. Out of state applications will be accepted.
TESTING PROCESS: Resume review, oral interview, psychological, polygraph and
medical exam after job offer. Non-Washington State Certified Officers are
required to attend and successfully complete a two-week State Equivalency
Academy within one year after hire.
