JOB DESCRIPTION
CITY OF MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, WA – POLICE CHIEF – Salary: $91,380 to $114,216 with excellent benefits. The City operates under the Council-Manager form of government and is a full service City, providing police, fire (contracted), streets, parks, recreation, water, sewer, development services and general administrative services with 174 FTEs. The Mountlake Terrace Police Department has four divisions: Patrol, Investigations, Community Services and Support Services. There are 41 full-time positions, including the Police Chief, two Assistant Chiefs, 6 Sergeants, 21 Officers, two Code Enforcement Officers, a Domestic Violence Coordinator and a Community Police Services Coordinator. The 2008 adopted budget for the department is $4.9 million. The Police Chief reports to the City Manager and serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). The Police Chief will plan, organize, direct and evaluate the activities of the Police Department and ensure protection of life and property and preservation of peace and order. The Chief performs other related administrative and supervisory responsibilities, as delegated by the City Manager, including Animal Control, Municipal Court, and Jail Services. The Chief will need to develop and maintain good communications with elected officials, the public, the media, the court system, and other law enforcement agencies. A Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, management or related field and ten years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience, including at least three years supervisory and/or administrative experience in a department of ten or more full-paid commissioned officer positions is required. A Master’s degree and completion of the F.B.I. National Academy is preferred. Certification as a Washington State Law Enforcement Officer must be obtained within the first six months of hire.
