POLICE OFFICER

Job Notice: 47252007ZZ Salary: $35,023 Annual, plus $2,000 incremental hiring incentive pay
Post Date: January 1, 2007 Close Date: Until Filled

Class Summary: Employees are trained to become Police Officers. Pre-employment process may take up to 12 weeks or longer. Applicants must pass a series of tests and interviews prior to selection as employees. Once selected, individuals must complete academy requirements, and if successful, continue to field training assisted by veteran officers (PO II or Corporals). This job requires a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace. We provide a 3% pay incentive for officers with an Associate’s degree, and a 6% pay incentive for officers with a Bachelor’s degree, a 3 night lodging/meals allowance is provided for out of area applicants in our 2nd phase of the background process, and a $1,500 relocation allowance is available for out of area new hires for Police Officer positions. Education/Experience and Licensure Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.; Valid Georgia Driver’s License;
  • Must be 21 years of age, 20 yrs old at time of application;
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to be eligible for Georgia P.O.S.T. certification;
  • Applicants may have to pass an exam to be eligible for this position; and
  • Must submit a completed Protective Service Background Form at the time of application, and successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation including criminal, controlled substance, credit, driving, work history, and physical agility testing.
Knowledge & Skills: Knowledge of:
  • Report preparation procedures; Computers and applicable software; and
  • Customer service principles.
Skill in:
  • Driving a vehicle; Preparing reports; Solving problems and decision making;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Essential Duties:
  • Assists with enforcing County and state laws when deemed necessary to provide a safe environment for the public;
  • Assists with the preparation of reports on crimes, violations and accidents committed within the County;
  • Assists in providing help to crime victims and the general public;
  • Assists in performing security checks of closed businesses and residential areas; Attends and testifies in court on behalf of the County;
  • Assists in maintaining County car, uniforms, weapons and county property; and; Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Physical Requirements: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manual dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to odors, dusts, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises and travel. MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ROTATING SHIFTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.
