JOB DESCRIPTION
Bethel Police Department
Bethel Alaska
Lateral and Candidate Police Officers
The Bethel Police Department is a progressive agency dedicated to providing community-orientated police services to a city of 6500, and to the 57 surrounding communities, which use Bethel as the trading and transportation hub, with a population of over 45,000. Bethel has the third busiest airport in Alaska and has three flights daily to Anchorage in addition to freight and charter services. Bethel is situated approximately 40 miles from the mountains and lies on the tundra beside the Kuskokwim River, a navigable river which has shipping to the Bethel Port. The Bethel area is ideal for the person who enjoys outdoor recreation and we have some of the best fishing available anywhere. Fish species include several varieties of Salmon, Pike, Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Grayling. Hunting species include trophy caribou, moose, brown and black bear, musk ox, dall sheep and many other small game species. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing in the winter and ATV and boating in the summer round out the activities. For those inclined, gold prospecting is also present here.
Presently we are looking for candidates and lateral police officers who are certifiable under APSC guidelines and are willing to communicate and help resolve problems for a culturally diverse community. We offer a benefit package which includes full medical and dental benefits for the employee and family, a moving allowance, educational incentive, retirement contribution into the Alaska PERS and are part of the Bethel Employee Union which provides collective bargaining and a peace officer's bill of rights. Our salary range starts at $41,159 to $70,396 DOE, with a 10% raise during the first year. Currently an incentive package is before the Council which includes a signing bonus and other enhanced benefits. Applications are available at the City of Bethel website and the process will include fully completed application forms, background investigation and any other testing required to meet APSC standards.
Bethel Police Department is a department of 16 sworn officers which is fully equipped with 4 wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, ATV's, rescue boat, tactical gear and provides all equipment except footwear.
